Designer Derek Chen has transformed must be a bunch of old wine barrels in a beautiful wine rack! The furniture manufacturer based in San Francisco recently debuted the "Pino Solo" wine limited edition tree he created for Newton Vineyard. To form the basis of each piece, Chen repurposed barrels previously used to make chardonnay in the cellar, giving a blink of eye to their past lives as well as the ecological philosophy of Newton.
Conceptualized under the annual challenge of Eco-Chic from Newton Vineyard in functional and aesthetic design furniture using salvaged materials from the center of the cellar, the wine tree Solo Pino provides storage space for 12 bottles of wine without taking up unnecessarily. The piece is named after a 100-ft-tall pine on the property of the cave that inspired Chen when he first visited the vineyard. The top of the basket is composed of eight vertical brushed metal rods which give a clean contemporary look, while the base provides a counterpoint rustic old oak. Only 100 of the special wine racks have been created.
The wine Solo Pino tree is available for $299 through the Web from Newton Vineyard site and store Design Helix SF, Morlen Sinoway workshop in Chicago and Sherry-Lehmann in New York. A portion of the sales will benefit the Napa Resource Conservation District, dedicated to the conservation of water and the management responsible for watersheds in the Napa Valley.
